Stairs are the hardest-working — and most-seen — wood in the house, and a tired staircase gives away an otherwise beautiful floor in a second. We refinish and install stair treads and risers so the run flows with the rest of your floors.
Carpet off, hardwood back
Our most common staircase job: pulling old carpet off the stairs and bringing back the wood underneath. We remove the carpet, tack strips, and every last staple, repair or replace damaged treads with new red oak or white oak, then sand, stain, and finish each step by hand to flow with your floors. The before-and-after on a carpeted staircase is one of the most dramatic transformations in the house.
Why it's specialist work
Every tread and riser is hand-worked — there's no big machine that fits a staircase. Getting the species, stain, and sheen to flow with your floors takes patience and a real eye, especially in older homes. It's slower, more detailed work than a flat floor, which is why stairs are priced per step.
One honest scope note: railings, spindles, and newel posts are a carpenter's and painter's trade, not ours. We focus on the treads and risers — the part that ties into your floors — and we do a lot of them.

Will the stairs flow with my floors?
When we refinish the stairs and floors together, they come out looking like one continuous run. If we're working stairs against an existing older floor, we'll get them as close as possible and tell you honestly what to expect.
