Custom color and finish work, done to an exacting standard.
This is the work people seek us out for: the exact color and look you're after, created on your floor and finished by hand in your home — not pulled off a factory shelf. It's painstaking, premium work, and it's where craftsmanship actually shows.
How we get the color right
Color isn't just "pick a stain." On many floors we water-pop the wood first — lightly raising the grain so it accepts stain more deeply and evenly — which is how you get rich, uniform color instead of blotchy patches. We sand to the right grit for the product (finer for water-based systems to control grain raise, in line with NWFA sand-and-finish guidance), then put your actual stain on your actual floor so you see the real result before we commit a single full coat. As the NWFA puts it bluntly: imperfections don't get better under another coat of finish — so we fix everything before color goes down.
Straight talk on color
Picking a color for a new floor or a full refinish? The sky's the limit — we'll get you exactly the look you want. Trying to blend new work into an existing floor? We'll be honest: aged wood and an old, ambered finish can't be matched perfectly — that's physics, not skill, and anyone who promises a flawless match is setting you up for disappointment. What we can do is get it impressively close and tell you up front exactly what to expect. We'd rather under-promise and wow you than the other way around.
Choosing the finish
The finish decides how your floor looks, feels, and wears. Here's where we land:
- Water-based polyurethane — what we recommend. Stays crystal clear and won't yellow, dries fast, and is far lower in odor and VOCs — better for your home and your family. We think it's simply the better finish, and it's what we put down on most of our floors.
- Oil-based polyurethane — if you want it. Ambers and warms the wood with a classic glow. We don't push it, but if that traditional look is what you're after, we'll do it.
- Penetrating / hardwax oils. Soak in for a natural, matte, barely-there look you can spot-repair, with periodic upkeep.
Then there's sheen — matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss — which isn't just looks: lower sheens hide scratches and everyday wear better. We'll help you choose the right system for how you actually live.
Wire-brushed texture — our premium add-on
For a floor with real character, we offer wire brushing as an add-on to the sanding process. A rotating wire brush pulls the softer springwood out of the grain, leaving the harder grain standing — a subtly textured, matte surface with a high-end, European feel. It's beautiful, and it's practical: texture hides everyday scratches, dents, and dog traffic far better than a smooth floor ever will. It works best on oak, pairs perfectly with custom stains and matte finishes, and is priced as a premium add-on. Ask us about it when we quote your project.
A note on cure time
A floor that feels dry isn't fully cured — per NWFA guidance, full hardness can take weeks. We'll tell you exactly when you can walk on it, move furniture back, and put the rugs down, so you don't undo great work in week one.
Common questions
Can you match my existing floors?
We'll be straight with you: an exact match to decades-old wood and aged finish isn't physically possible — anyone who promises one is overpromising. We get it as close as it can be done and tell you honestly what to expect. For a new floor or full refinish, you can have any color you want.
Do you use water-based or oil-based finish?
We recommend and mostly use water-based — it's clearer, doesn't yellow, low-odor, and better for your home. We'll do oil-based if you specifically want that warm, ambered look.
How long until I can use the room?
You'll often be walking on it within a day, but full cure takes longer — we give you a clear timeline for whichever finish you choose.
